Microneedling has established itself as a trusted and effective treatment for improving skin texture, tone, and addressing early signs of aging. Recently, ellacor® with Micro-Coring Technology has introduced a different approach that targets deeper structural concerns without the need for surgery or visible scarring.

While these treatments are often compared, they function in completely different ways and achieve results at varying depths. Understanding these differences is crucial for selecting the option that will yield the most significant and lasting improvement for your skin.

At Criswell & Criswell Plastic Surgery & Medspa, we regularly evaluate aesthetic technologies through the lens of board-certified surgical expertise, facial anatomy, and long-term outcomes. Since we offer both ellacor® and traditional microneedling, we are uniquely qualified to help you determine which treatment is best for you.

What Microneedling Does Well

Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin over time.

Doing so can improve the following through collagen remodeling and regeneration:

  • Fine lines and early wrinkles
  • Certain types of scarring, such as mild acne scarring
  • Uneven tone or texture
  • Enlarged pores

Because microneedling creates micro-channels rather than removing tissue, it also:

  • Enhances absorption of topical therapies such as PRP or biologic serums
  • Has little to no downtime
  • Can be repeated to optimize results

Microneedling is an excellent option for improving skin quality and achieving long-term maintenance, particularly in patients with mild aging concerns. However, it does not remove skin or meaningfully tighten lax tissue.

The ellacor® Micro-Coring Difference

Rather than stimulating the skin through injury alone, ellacor® uses FDA-cleared Micro-Coring Technology to physically remove thousands of microscopic cores of excess or aging skin.

By removing up to 8% of skin in a treated area, ellacor® produces true tissue contraction and tightening as the skin heals. The result is a structural change in skin laxity, which is something microneedling cannot achieve.

The FDA clearance for ellacor® specifically addresses the treatment of wrinkles in the mid-to-lower face, reflecting its role in addressing more advanced aging concerns. ellacor® is uniquely effective for:

  • Moderate to severe wrinkles
  • Loose or sagging skin
  • Crepey skin texture
  • Jowls, marionette lines, and jawline softening
  • Select body areas such as arms, thighs, abdomen, and chest

Clinical studies have reported that approximately 90% of patients experienced visible improvement in wrinkles, with high satisfaction rates and natural-looking results. Because ellacor® does not rely on heat or energy, it also avoids some of the pigmentation risks associated with thermal devices, an important consideration in skin rejuvenation.

Microneedling vs. ellacor® At-a-Glance

Microneedling

  • Stimulates collagen through controlled micro-injury
  • Improves texture, tone, pores, and fine lines
  • No skin removal
  • Minimal to no downtime
  • Results build gradually with repeated treatments

ellacor® Micro-Coring

  • Physically removes micro-cores of excess or aged skin
  • Produces real tightening through tissue contraction
  • Targets moderate to severe laxity and wrinkles
  • Typically, 3–7 days of social downtime
  • Results are long-lasting and structural
  • No visible scarring

Why We Offer Both, But Often Recommend ellacor®

Microneedling remains a valuable option for patients seeking to enhance skin health, refine texture, and address early signs of aging. It is efficient, well-tolerated, and effective when used thoughtfully as part of a long-term maintenance plan.

For patients seeking deeper correction—particularly for skin laxity, crepey texture, or more advanced wrinkles—ellacor® offers a fundamentally different level of rejuvenation by addressing excess skin itself, rather than stimulating the surface alone.
