Choosing Silicone Breast Implants

Choosing the right breast implants is a key to successful Charlotte breast augmentation.

Your body type and breast goals are personal and are not exactly like any other woman’s. Your Charlotte plastic surgeon at Criswell & Criswell will help guide you in your choices. Rest assured that any implant you choose in our practice is 100% FDA approved and all have been rigorously tested for safety. Our current fourth generation silicone breast implants is the most studied medical device in history.

During your consultation with us, you will get to hold the different types of breast implants. For many of our patients, having the chance to feel a silicone breast implant next to saline breast implants helped them make their decision. Many people believe that the gel breast implants feel more natural, more like a real breast. The inside is filled with soft, silicone gel. It feel very much like real breast tissue.

In the past, the silicone inside had more of a honey-like consistency. The new fourth generation silicone is more solid, almost (but not quite) the consistency of a gummy bear.

This firm gel gives the breast implants their natural feel and also decreases the chance of silicone migration in the event of a leak. These implants come in many different shapes, sizes, and profiles, giving you and your surgeon a wide range of options to fit your individual needs. Our plastic surgeons at Criswell & Criswell use both Allergan and Mentor fourth generation silicone breast implants.

In addition to the extremely popular fourth generation gel breast implants, our plastic surgeons also use the newer Fifth generation highly cohesive breast implants. These textured implants are more firm than the cohesive implants and have a gel interior that is like a gummy bear in texture and consistency. These breast implants are FDA approved and because of their firmer texture, ripple and wrinkle less than other types of implants.

The new gummy bear style breast implants are available in a wide selection different shapes and sizes and are also available as a shaped, or tear drop style. Both surgeons at Criswell & Criswell are well known in Charlotte for their knowledge and experience with breast implants, and both surgeons offer the gummy bear implant.

Recovery and Care

Immediately following your surgery, the first step is to relax in our recovery room, overseen by our licensed registered nurse. You can remain there until you are fully awake, at which point you will be released to go home. Transportation should be arranged beforehand, as you will not be permitted to drive for 24 hours following the surgery.

While we recommend waiting a full week before returning to work, some patients are able to do it in 5 or 6 days, provided the work does not require physical strain. Normal bras and bikini tops may be worn once two weeks have passed. Exercise and any sort of strenuous activity are prohibited for the first five days following surgery. Light exercise may be resumed at this point, but more vigorous physical activity should not take place until three weeks since surgery.

Your relationship with our office is not over once the procedure is complete. For the weeks and months following the surgery, we are at your disposal—you are more than welcome to call whenever you like with any questions or concerns. Additionally, there will be several follow up appointments with your surgeon to check on the healing process. This will include information regarding breast health, including self-examination, exercise, sleeping habits and any future need for imaging or mammography.
