Breast Reconstruction Revision

Breast reconstruction surgery is a critical aspect of restoring confidence after a mastectomy. Sadly, in some cases, the breast reconstruction may not have met your expectations. Various problems may have left you feeling dissatisfied with the appearance of restored breast or breasts, including.

  • Capsular contracture
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Rippling
  • Excessive scarring
  • Restored breast fails to match remaining breast
  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Poor or unnatural breast shape
  • Breasts that appear unnatural
  • Flap reconstruction failures

Your Breasts After Mastectomy

Restoring your breasts after a mastectomy can be accomplished in various ways, depending upon the needs and wishes of the individual patient. The types of procedures used include:

  • Implant reconstruction (saline or silicone)
  • Flap reconstruction (uses transplanted tissue from another body area)
  • Nipple reconstruction

Any of these procedures can produce less-than-satisfactory results. Whether the original surgery was not performed correctly, or a later complication developed, breast reconstruction revision may be needed when something has gone wrong. When it is time to undergo another surgery, particularly after the long and stressful road to health after breast cancer, you want to ensure the surgery is performed by a highly-rated plastic surgeon. With a five-star rating on Healthgrades, Dr. Bryan Criswell has garnered a reputation for being one a leading plastic surgeon serving the Charlotte area.

Candidates for Breast Reconstruction Revision Surgery

Women who are unhappy with the results of an earlier breast reconstruction, are in good health, and not currently undergoing cancer treatment are typically good candidates for revision surgery. In many cases, this surgery is covered by health insurance. We invite you to visit us to speak with us about your concerns and to have your condition evaluated.

How Long is Breast Reconstructive Revision Surgery?

Revision surgery typically takes place about three months after the initial surgery. In many cases, the revision is part of a full breast reconstruction procedure to finalize the appearance of the reconstructed breast, to match symmetry with the remaining breast, or to perform reshaping.

The length of time needed for your surgical procedure and what corrective surgical actions will be required will vary, based upon your unique needs and the type of reconstruction that was initially performed. The surgery typically ranges from one to four hours in most cases.

What to Expect: Recovery from Breast Reconstruction Revision

The recovery time will vary, based upon the number of procedures needed to create natural-looking, symmetrical breasts. While some women may require more extensive surgical revisions, in most cases the timeline for recovery requires less time than what was experienced after the original surgery.

Bruising, swelling, itching and some discomfort are to be expected but can be managed with prescription pain medication (when needed) in the early stages. At Criswell & Criswell, we carefully monitor our patients through every stage of recovery.

While we recommend waiting a full week before returning to work, some patients are able to do it in 5 or 6 days, provided the work does not require physical strain. Normal bras and bikini tops may be worn once two weeks have passed. Exercise and any sort of strenuous activity are prohibited for the first five days following surgery. Light exercise may be resumed at this point, but more vigorous physical activity should not take place until three weeks since surgery.

Your relationship with our office is not over once the procedure is complete. For the weeks and months following the surgery, we are at your disposal—you are more than welcome to call whenever you like with any questions or concerns. Additionally, there will be several follow up appointments with your surgeon to check on the healing process. This will include information regarding breast health, including self-examination, exercise, sleeping habits and any future need for imaging or mammography.

The Benefits of Breast Reconstruction Revision

The benefits of finally achieving natural-looking breasts go far beyond the cosmetic. The confidence in your body image is a critical aspect in a full recovery and restored emotional wellbeing. When your breasts appear natural, including a pleasing nipple structure, your confidence in your body can soar – with life ahead free from personal concerns or embarrassment about asymmetry, unbalanced breasts, or other problem.
