Laser Skin Resurfacing

Age, injuries, and other environmental factors can lead to eye-catching irregularities on the facial skin. Over time, the skin can start to sag and wrinkle or have patches of discoloration. Acne and injuries can leave distracting scars or even deformities on the face. Advances in laser treatment technology now offer multiple solutions for uneven skin tone and other abnormalities. The qualified staff at Criswell & Criswell Plastic Surgery in Charlotte, NC is experienced in Erbium Yag laser technology, and is prepared to help you restore a smoother texture, even tone, and a more youthful glow.
Erbium Yag Laser Resurfacing
Though there are different types of laser resurfacing, the Erbium Yag laser specifically can be used to create a controlled burn of the most superficial layers of skin, and achieve a dramatic result in the improvement of skin tone and texture. Also known as a laser peel, these controlled ablative lasers have the ability to diminish the following symptoms:
- Wrinkles
- Crepey skin
- Acne scars
- Scars from past injuries
- Surface irregularities like sun spots or patchy skin tone
- Significant skin damage from sun exposure, past smoking, or normal aging
When you come in for your resurfacing treatment, the staff will first cover any sensitive areas like the eyes and skin that surround the treatment area. The laser is passed over the skin, sending out brief pulses of laser energy to destroy thin layers of the skin. The control and precision of the laser can allow our clinical staff to target delicate areas, such as around the lips and eyes. The Laser can also be used to treat the entire face, or in the combination with face-lift and eyelid lift procedures to produce a comprehensive rejuvenation. The elimination of the top layer of skin triggers growth of new, fresh skin, which is what helps restore the youthful smoothness to your face. In addition, the treatment stimulates collagen formation, which improves skins elasticity and tone. Patients normally only report a slight burning or stinging sensation, which subsides with time after the treatment is completed.

Recovery Time and Aftercare
The procedure is generally performed as an outpatient procedure with a topical numbing agent. Because the results are so profound, the treatments tend to take a bit longer and do require more recovery time than less ablative lasers. Ablative lasers require approximately four to six weeks of initial healing.
Most patients see profound results with one treatment. Depending on the depth of the wrinkle or sun damage an additional treatment may be recommended. Our surgeons will guide you in your consultation to determine expected number of treatments.
After the treatment, the skin will be red or swollen in the treatment area, while the skin starts to regenerate. After the treatment, your practitioner will review your post procedure instructions which typically include application of an ointment or cream to help maintain hydration in the skin. As with any laser treatment, it is important to avoid long durations of sun exposure after treatment.
