If you have recently lost a great deal of weight through bariatric surgery or if pregnancies or normal body aging have caused you to gain and lose weight over time, you may be bothered by drooping excess skin along your upper arm.
WHAT IS A ARM LIFT?
Brachioplasty, or arm lift, is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess skin to tighten and tone the appearance of your upper arms. This procedure sculpts and firms the arms to achieve a more contoured, attractive appearance.
WHY GET AN ARM LIFT?
In some cases, this loss of skin elasticity is merely due to the natural aging process. If the extra skin on your upper arms keeps you from wearing your favorite clothes or wanting to raise your arms over your head, consider an arm lift to restore a youthful-looking contour to your arms. In some cases, the incision (and subsequent scars) can be kept hidden in the axilla, but in most cases, the incision extends from the armpit to the elbow to remove the maximum amount of skin.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A THIGH LIFT?
A thigh lift provides many benefits for patients who want to tighten and firm their thighs and achieve a tighter, more sculpted appearance. Benefits include the following:
- Lifts and contours the thighs, removing excess skin and fat
- Creates a more shapely, appealing physique
- Achieves more comfort in the area, as thighs no longer rub together
- Exercise is easier and more comfortable
- Eliminates chafing and rashes
- Resolves cellulite and uneven skin texture on the thighs
- Achieves a better fit in clothing
- Creates a more contoured, youthful appearance
- Helps to complete your weight loss journey
- Helps to improve self-confidence
WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ARM LIFT?
This procedure is performed with IV sedation or general anesthesia. An incision is made on the underside or back or your arm, between the armpit and elbow. The location and length of the incision depend on the significance of the surgical procedure needed to achieve your aesthetic goals.
Using this incision, excess skin is trimmed away. The muscles in the arm may be tightened to help achieve a toned, sculpted appearance.
If you have excess fat on your arms, your plastic surgeon may combine liposuction with your brachioplasty for the best results. Keep in mind that a full arm lift is impossible to do without leaving a scar. Most patients feel that the benefits of brachioplasty far outweigh the scars left behind by the surgery.
RECOVERY AFTER AN ARM LIFT?
You will experience tightness, swelling, and bruising in the upper arms. You may feel some tingling and numbness in your hands. These effects are a natural part of the recovery process after an arm lift. They will resolve and fade as your recovery period progresses.
You will need about 1-2 weeks of downtime after your arm lift. You will be able to slowly return to your usual activities after this period of time. Do not exercise or participate in other strenuous activities for up to six or eight weeks.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR AN ARM LIFT?
Candidates for an arm lift have sagging skin on the upper arms, and they want to achieve a firmer, more sculpted contour. Ideal arm lift candidates should meet the following requirements:
- Are in good health
- Have no serious medical concerns
- Are not significantly overweight
- Do not smoke
- Are at a relatively stable weight they can maintain
- Are realistic in their expectations for what an arm lift can achieve
