What Happens During a Chin Augmentation Procedure?

For augmentation (mentoplasty), either chin implants or actual reshaping of the bone can be performed by our plastic surgeons. Local or general anesthesia is used. Once this takes effect, a small incision is made inside the mouth or in an inconspicuous place in the crease under the chin. A surgical pocket is made for the implant, and the implant is placed there and secured with sutures in front of the jawbone. From there, the incision is carefully closed.

Recovery After Chin Augmentation

For several days following your chin implant surgery, there will be some bruising, swelling, and discomfort. During this time, you will need to follow a liquid-only diet and you will wear a compression bandage.

Most patients feel able to return to light, sedentary work and usual activities within about a week or two. Do not do anything strenuous or exercise for 6 to 8 weeks.
