What is BOTOX?
BOTOX is a simple, nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment that can improve, and in some cases completely erase, mild to moderate wrinkles. The treatment, which is performed in our office, consists of a few tiny injections and generally takes 10-15 minutes.
Who is a candidate for BOTOX treatments?
Nearly everyone in good health is a candidate for BOTOX treatments. Candidates for BOTOX want to reverse the aging process and achieve smooth, wrinkle-free skin. Ideal BOTOX candidates should meet the following requirements:
- Are healthy and have no serious medical concerns
- Do not have any type of skin infection, rash, or other outbreak in the treatment area
- Are not pregnant or nursing
- Don’t have an allergy to the BOTOX ingredients (this is rare)
- Do not have a history of neuromuscular disease
What Are the Benefits of BOTOX?
BOTOX is such a popular treatment because of the many benefits it achieves for patients. By temporarily relaxing the key facial muscles that are causing wrinkles and fine lines, BOTOX provides the following benefits:
- Smoother skin
- A refreshed, younger-looking appearance
- A prejuvenation option for younger patients who want to hold off wrinkles from appearing in the first place
- Facial rejuvenation results without surgery or incisions
- Procedure time is very short
- Treatment is nearly painless
- No downtime or significant recovery period
What Areas Does BOTOX Treat?
BOTOX addresses fine lines and wrinkles that result from age almost anywhere on the face. It is also used in other cosmetic treatments, such as a lip flip, addressing a gummy smile, and lifting the corners of the mouth. Common areas treated with BOTOX in Charlotte, NC include the following:
- Around the eye area, such as crow’s feet
- Glabellar/ frown lines between the eyebrows
- Horizontal forehead lines on the brow
- Bunny lines around the nose
- Wrinkles around the mouth and lips
- Platysmal bands in the neck
- Chin dimples and wrinkles
How Does BOTOX Work?
The lines that appear across your forehead (transverse forehead rhytids), between your brows (glabellar “frown” lines), and smile lines at the corners of your eyes and on your nose are actually the result of muscle movement beneath the skin and the steady passage of time. As you make facial expressions throughout your normal day, your facial muscles contract, causing the overlying skin to wrinkle. This is quite apparent when most people frown, emphasizing the glabellar frown lines between your eyes.
Over time, this continual wrinkling of the muscles causes facial lines to stay longer and become more pronounced. For women, whose faces tend to be more animated than men’s and whose skin is typically more delicate, these lines may be more exaggerated.
What to Expect During Your BOTOX Treatment
Our experienced nurse injector will tailor your treatment to your goals. Anesthetic is not usually needed, as the treatment is not considered painful for most patients. However, if you are more comfortable with a numbing cream, we will apply this first.
In general, a BOTOX treatment starts with facial cleansing. This step ensures no makeup residue or anything else is on the surface of your skin. Next, we will use a fine needle to inject BOTOX into the muscles causing wrinkles. This completes your treatment. From there, you can carry on with your normal daily routine.
Results After BOTOX
After your procedure, you will often be able to see a dramatic result the same day or within a few days. For patients new to BOTOX, it may take up to two weeks for the ultimate results to fully appear.
Results generally last for three to four months, although individual results vary. After your treatment, you can still smile, frown, and look surprised. It will not “change your look,” only refresh your appearance. You will simply look younger and more rested without the wrinkles and creases you had before.
Is there a recovery period after BOTOX?
There is generally no recovery period after a BOTOX treatment, but keep in mind there may be some minor side effects. These may include minor swelling, small red bumps, or some redness in the treatment area. These effects usually fade within about one hour or so.
Most patients continue on with their day after their BOTOX injections are complete. However, for the next two days, don’t massage the treatment area, as this could spread the BOTOX formula to other parts of the face. Also during these two days, don’t do a heavy workout or drink alcohol.
