Skin Cancer and Skin Lesion Treatment

A skin cancer diagnosis can be daunting. The thought of cancer treatments, surgical procedures, and leftover visible scars are all valid concerns. A plastic surgeon may not be your first thought for cancer treatment, but coming to a plastic surgeon means you will not only get careful removal and treatment of skin cancer or lesions, you will also get a doctor who takes special care to reduce the appearance of any scars after treatment. Particularly if the skin cancer occurs on the face, it is imperative that you seek an experienced surgeon from Criswell & Criswell Plastic Surgery in Charlotte, NC for treatment and removal of skin cancer and skin lesions.

Procedure for Removal of Skin Cancer or Lesions

At Criswell & Criswell, we work closely with your dermatologist or primary care physician to ensure you receive the gold standard of care for your skin cancer or lesion diagnosis. Our surgeons work closely with many Mohs dermatologic surgeons. In some cases, our surgeons will remove the cancerous site and perform reconstruction on the same day. Depending on the diagnosis, your dermatologist may choose to work in conjunction with our board-certified surgeons to remove the cancer and perform reconstruction as a staged procedure for the best possible outcome.

  • Preparation. Depending on the severity and depth of the affected area, the doctor may recommend local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia to reduce pain during the procedure.
  • Surgery. Once the diagnosis is made, the doctor will remove the cancerous growth from the skin. If the lump is larger or more aggressive than originally identified, the doctor may take more cells and test them under a microscope and repeat the process until the cells come back non-cancerous. The time spent in surgery will be longer, but the chances of cancer remaining after surgery are reduced.
  • Reconstruction. If the cancer or lesion is small and contained, the small incision can be closed and minimal scarring will occur. At times the cancerous area requires removal of a large amount of skin or tissue, leaving the remaining area vulnerable for larger scars or disfigurement. The surrounding healthy tissue may be repositioned over the wound when large amounts of tissue have been removed. The surgeon will usually attempt to have any stitches follow the natural curves of the face or body to disguise the remaining scars from the incision.
  • Recovery. After surgery is complete, the surgeon will bandage the affected area and provide aftercare instructions. They will schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor the healing process.

Most side effects include discomfort , swelling, or bruising near the treatment area, and subside with time. While rare, serious side effects may include changes in skin sensitivity or sensation, recurrence of skin cancer, or infection. Stay out of direct sun during the healing process, and monitor your skin for any other signs of cancer.
