What Is PRP & PDGF?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a regenerative treatment created from a small sample of the patient’s own blood. After processing the sample in a centrifuge, the platelet component becomes concentrated into plasma that contains powerful biologic signaling molecules.

These platelets release growth factors that help regulate healing and tissue regeneration. One of the most important growth factors in PRP is platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), which plays a key role in wound healing, angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), and cellular repair.

When PRP is activated, platelets release numerous regenerative proteins, including:

  • Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)
  • Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β)
  • Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)
  • Epidermal growth factor (EGF)

These molecules signal surrounding cells to repair damaged tissue, stimulate collagen production, and promote circulation.

In some applications, PRP can be converted into a platelet-rich fibrin matrix or gel, also known as PRP gel. This gel-like form allows growth factors to remain at the treatment site longer, helping support sustained tissue regeneration and healing.

Because PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, it is considered a biologically compatible therapy that works with the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

How PRP & PDGF Are Used at Criswell & Criswell Plastic Surgery & Medspa

Facial Rejuvenation

PRP injections or topical application during procedures may support collagen production, improve skin texture, and enhance recovery following treatments such as microneedling or laser resurfacing

Laser Treatments

PRP may be applied following laser procedures to help calm inflammation and support skin repair during the recovery process

Hair Restoration

PRP injections are widely used in hair restoration protocols to stimulate hair follicles and support hair growth in patients experiencing thinning or early hair loss

Body Treatments

PRP may be incorporated into regenerative protocols designed to support tissue healing, improve skin quality, and enhance recovery following body procedures

Wellness and Tissue Health

Growth factors released from platelets are also being studied for their potential role in supporting tissue regeneration and improving healing responses throughout the body

Benefits of PRP & PDGF Therapy

  • Stimulates collagen and elastin production
  • Supports tissue repair and regeneration
  • Encourages improved circulation and angiogenesis
  • May enhance healing after aesthetic procedures
  • Improves skin texture and overall skin quality
  • Supports hair follicle activity in hair restoration treatments
  • Uses the patient’s own biologic materials

Are You a Good Candidate for PRP & PDGF Therapy?

PRP and PDGF therapies may be appropriate for patients who meet certain medical criteria and are good candidates for regenerative treatments. Ideal candidates typically:

  • Are in generally good overall health
  • Have adequate platelet levels and normal blood clotting function
  • Do not have active infections, chronic inflammatory conditions, or uncontrolled medical disorders
  • Are not taking medications that significantly interfere with platelet function or healing
  • Are non-smokers or willing to stop smoking before treatment
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding, when applicable
  • Have realistic expectations about the potential outcomes of regenerative therapies

Because PRP treatments rely on the body’s natural healing response, factors such as platelet count, circulation, and overall health can affect the therapy's effectiveness.

What to Expect with PRP & PDGF Therapy

Consultation

Your consultation is the first step in determining whether PRP therapy is appropriate for your treatment plan.

During your visit, we will:

  • Review your medical history
  • Evaluate your goals and concerns
  • Discuss treatment options and regenerative therapies
  • Develop a personalized care plan
  • Costs vary depending on the treatment area and whether PRP is combined with other procedures.

Procedure

  • PRP therapy typically follows several steps:
  • Blood collection: A small sample of blood is drawn from your arm.
  • Centrifuge processing: The blood is processed to isolate platelet-rich plasma.
  • Activation: The PRP may be activated to release growth factors.
  • Application or injection: The PRP is injected or applied to the treatment area.

The entire process typically takes less than an hour.

Recovery and Results

  • Most PRP treatments involve minimal downtime. Patients may experience:
  • Mild redness or swelling for 24–48 hours
  • Gradual improvement as collagen production increases
  • Continued tissue regeneration over several weeks

Results often develop gradually as the body responds to platelet-derived growth factors.
