Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and at the same time flatten and tighten the abdominal muscles and midsection. After pregnancy and with weight gain and weight loss, the body develops excess skin and fat and loses skin elasticity and muscle tone. The ideal candidate for an abdominoplasty is someone who has been unable to tone his or her abdominal region, even with the help of a healthy diet and exercise routine.

After pregnancy, some women chose to have a combination of both abdominoplasty for their abdomen and a breast lift for their breasts. Often, liposuction can be used in conjunction with the tummy tuck to better contour select areas.

The procedure benefits both women and men, with the male tummy tuck becoming an increasingly common way for men to flatten the difficult-to-tone abdominal region. The surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, with patients performing simple daily activities within a few days. Patients may return to work within one to two weeks and can resume full exercise routines around 4-6 weeks.

Individual results vary according to procedure and patient goals. For representative before and after photographs (click here), from the American Society of Plastic Surgery website.
