Silicone Breast Implants

Every woman wants to feel that her breasts fit her body. For some women, that perfect picture may be of small, firm breasts. For others, it might be a look of voluptuousness that fills out their natural curves. No matter what look you would like see, there is a type of breast implant, either saline breast implants or silicone breast implants, that can transform your shape.

The art and science of breast implant surgery has improved dramatically over the last sixty years. Breast Implants have been around since 1960, and those earlier styles of implants are now a thing of the past. The current fourth generation cohesive gel breast implants have been FDA approved in the since 2006, while the current style of saline breast implants have been around since 2000.

It’s Your Choice: Silicone or Saline Implants

Silicone Breast Implants

Choosing the right breast implants is a key to successful Charlotte breast augmentation. Your body type and breast goals are personal and are not exactly like any other woman’s. Your Charlotte plastic surgeon at Criswell & Criswell will help guide you in your choices. Rest assured that any implant you choose in our practice is 100% FDA approved and all have been rigorously tested for safety. Our current fourth generation silicone breast implants is the most studied medical device in history.

During your consultation with us, you will get to hold the different types of breast implants. For many of our patients, having the chance to feel a silicone breast implant next to saline breast implants helped them make their decision. Many people believe that the gel breast implants feel more natural, more like a real breast. The reason for their feel is their two layers. The outside of the implant is a strong layer, extremely resistant to damage. In fact, it is almost impossible to rupture this layer. The inside is filled with soft, silicone gel. It feel very much like real breast tissue.

In the past, the silicone inside had more of a honey-like consistency. The new fourth generation silicone is more solid, almost (but not quite) the consistency of a gummy bear. This firm gel gives the breast implants their natural feel and also decreases the chance of silicone migration in the event of a leak. These implants come in many different shapes, sizes, and profiles, giving you and your surgeon a wide range of options to fit your individual needs. Our plastic surgeons at Criswell & Criswell use both Allergan and Mentor fourth generation silicone breast implants.

In addition to the extremely popular fourth generation gel breast implants, our plastic surgeons also use the newer Fifth generation highly cohesive breast implants. These textured implants are more firm than the cohesive implants and have a gel interior that is like a gummy bear in texture and consistency. These breast implants are FDA approved and because of their firmer texture, ripple and wrinkle less than other types of implants.

The new gummy bear style breast implants are available in a wide selection different shapes and sizes and are also available as a shaped, or tear drop style. Both surgeons at Criswell & Criswell are well known in Charlotte for their knowledge and experience with breast implants, and both surgeons offer the gummy bear implant; either the Allergan 410 or the Sientra Silimed-brand highly cohesive, form stable breast implants.
